What’s Involved |
| Letters | Writing letters for superiors was a major responsibility as a Naval Officer. In fact, for 3 years, I was also Administrative Office on USS Virginia, CGN38 and constantly wrote and edited letters in the very specific Navy style. Since that time, I’ve been working in one company or another, doing consulting, marketing, PR, and many other tasks. Writing letters is a given. |
| Articles | I’ve had hundreds of articles published on a wide variety of subjects including highly technical (Stellar Atmospheres), Computer Related (PC’s, PC Software, and more), Navigation, Seamanship, and other subjects. Our primary marketing while at ETSI was placing articles in targeted magazines to highlight our company as an expert resource. I wrote the articles published in magazines to fit. |
| Reports | Consultants live on reports. Much of our proof of work done is communicated through reports and presentations. |
| Books | I’ve written two books and many other book length reports, studies, treatises, and so forth. If you need a ghost writer to take over a project and make it work, drop me a line. |
| Manuals | I’ve written manuals for whole product lines and for individual hardware and software systems. I emphsize practical use in my writing, focusing on what it takes to get something done. My written manuals try to provide not only the step-by-step instructions needed by the amateur, but also the deeper meaning required by the expert and support for those in between. |
| Help Systems | Help systems are a special problem in software development. Good help can be hard to find. The help system has to support the beginner and the advanced user and not confuse or frustrate either. |
| Web Pages | I’ve written hundreds of web pages on sites of my own, sites for employers, and for other purposes. I can work with Content Management Systems where you only need to add the text or directly in HTML/CSS where you have to be intimately familiar with the capabilities of HTML and CSS in order to make it really work. |
| Advertising Copy | I’ve written advertising copy for highly technical (electronic equipment) and highly non-technical (personal services). No copy is perfect, but the best feedback I got was someone telling me how memorable my copy was. |
| Copy Editing | Good copy for advertising requires good copy-editing. I’m skilled at the process and can tighten most anything given, producing better copy than before. |
| Speeches | I’ve created and given speeches around the world at conferences and before both large and small groups. For many of these, the speeches were primarily marketing for the company I worked for at the time. With several companies, we marketed ourselves as subject matter experts, so being visible at conferences and gatherings was very important. Being believeable was even more important. |
